Portsmouth Police deal with B&E, assault, weapons charges

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some recent arrests made by the Portsmouth Police Department:

Tuesday, May 7

Kayvan Castellanos, 29, of 646 Bristol Ferry Road, Apt. 2, was charged with breaking and entering into a dwelling house without the owner’s consent. Officers responded to the address at about 5:45 p.m. to investigate a report of a no-contact order being violated, police said. When they arrived, officers determined that Castellanos had entered the residence without permission, according to police.

Wednesday, May 8

Joseph Hicks, 39, of 683 Aquidneck Ave., Middletown, was arrested on numerous charges after officers responded to Portsmouth Publick House, 600 Clock Tower Square, for a report of an assault in progress at about 8:35 p.m., police said. Hicks threw a pizza tray at someone while yelling inside the restaurant, according to police. As officers attempted to take him into custody, Hicks actively resisted, police said. He was charged with simple assault or battery, disorderly conduct (fighting/tumultuous behavior), and resisting arrest. Hicks was held overnight at the police station before being transferred to the Middletown Police Department shortly before 6 a.m. He was later transported to court by Portsmouth Police Department detectives.

Karen R. Wedge, 70, of 390 West Main Road, was charged with simple assault or battery. Officers responded to her home at about 10:25 p.m. after receiving a report of an unwanted party, police said. Officers determined that Wedge had attempted to retrieve a lease agreement from a person’s hand and scratched him in the process, according to police. Wedge was held overnight at the police station before being transported to the Middletown Police Department just before 6 a.m. She was later transported to court by Portsmouth Police detectives.

Thursday, May 9

Benjamin Lee Callandret, 38, of 16 Clement St., Apt. 2, Tiverton, was charged with possessing an illegal weapon other than a firearm. Callandret was a passenger in a vehicle that had been pulled over on Route 24 shortly before noon, and officers observed a large knife that was in close proximity to the driver, police said. 

Sunday, May 12

Edwin Isai Lopez Beteta, 28, of 136 Wendell St., Apt. 3, Providence, was charged with forgery and counterfeiting of registration plates, and giving a false document to a public official. Lopez Beteta was pulled over for speeding on East Main Road at Hargaves Drive shortly before 9 a.m., police said. Both the vehicle’s temporary registration and registration form were counterfeit, according to police. 

Monday, May 13

Sean James Connolly, 24, of 772 King Philip St., Fall River, was charged with driving under the influence, first offense, after being pulled over for a motor vehicle violation on Route 24 at Sprague Street at about 12:20 a.m. Connolly was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test, police said.
