The Portsmouth High School boys' soccer team beat Barrington 3-2 on Wednesday, Sept. 7, but the Eagles rebounded on Friday, defeating Cumberland 1-0.

Timothy Nolan scored Barrington's goal on a header in the first half, while Elias Hastings tallied the assist. Ben Gentile finished the game with four saves against the Clippers. 

Barrington football team falls to Middletown.

Against Portsmouth, Barrington fell behind but mounted a comeback bid. Barrington's Harry Browne and Louis Bachetti each scored goals in the second half to narrow the margin. Ben Gentile and Emanuel Despines each made two saves for Barrington, which fell to 0-1. 

Girls' soccer

Barrington improved to 2-1 with a pair of wins last week. The Eagles defeated Coventry 4-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and beat Cranston West 2-1 on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Against Coventry, Barrington's Anna Downes scored twice while Olivia Middleton and Claire Grover each added single goals. Downes, Claire Grover, Elizabeth Grover and Kamryn Voutes each tallied assists. The Eagles held a 1-0 lead at halftime before scoring three times in the second half. Barrington's Patricia Ceseretti made 10 saves in net.

Against Cranston West, Middleton scored twice and Grace Faulkner had two assists to help Barrington to the victory. Ceseretti made 8 saves.

Girls' volleyball

The Barrington girls' volleyball team pushed its record to 3-0 with a 3-1 win over Prout and a 3-0 victory over Chariho.

Against Prout, Noelle Cooke had 25 assists, five digs and six aces, while Maile Somera recorded 19 kills, 8 digs and five aces. Kaylee Feather also played well, tallying 10 digs and 3 aces. Barrington won, 25-23, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14. 

On Thursday, the Eagles rolled over Chariho, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18.

Girls' tennis

Barrington won its first match of the season, defeating Bay View 6-1, and dropped its next two — losing 6-1 to LaSalle and 4-3 to Mt. St. Charles. 

Against Bay View, Barrington singles players Sarah Erickson (number 2), Andreea Dan (number 3) and Eve Stockwell (number 4) each captured victories. Top singles player Abby Voigt played well in a tough 7-5, 6-4 loss to Sarah Curran.

Barrington's number one doubles team of Abigail and Jillian Walter won a three set thriller, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. At second doubles, Alexis Brenner and Rayna Mishra won 6-3, 6-1, and the third doubles team of Lauren Jay and Glory Ellison won 6-2, 6-3. 

Barrington coach Betsy Brenner said she was very proud of her team in the opening match win. She added that her roster is filled with young players — "We have four freshmen who made the varsity. We're a young team, but the future's bright."

Stockwell, Alexis Brenner, Jay and Beth Wang are the freshmen on the team. Alternates include sophomores Hope Vetromile and Corina Drimbarean and junior Alyssa Borden.

Barrington's co-captains are seniors Voigt and Erickson. 

Against the defending state champion LaSalle team, Barrington's doubles team of Mishra and Brenner grabbed the lone win.

Against Mt. St. Charles, Voigt and Dan each won their singles matches, while Ellison and Jay won a three set battle at third doubles, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (8). Fourth singles netter Stockwell lost in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and the second doubles team of Brenner and Mishra fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Barrington plays home matches against Wheeler on Wednesday and Moses Brown on Friday. 

Field hockey

Barrington improved to 3-0-1 with a 6-0 win over Lincoln High School on Monday, Sept. 12. The victory followed a 1-1 tie against defending state champs Moses Brown on Thursday, Sept. 8. 

Against Lincoln, Elizabeth Lewis scored three goals and had an assist, while Piper Broomhead found the back of the Lions' goal twice. Lillyanne Dunphy scored once and also had an assist. Lily Gagliano  had three assists and Claudia Kriz also assisted on a goal. Caileigh Durkin notched the shutout in net.

Against Moses Brown, Barrington's Lewis scored a first half goal to give the home team the advantage. The Quakers tied the game mid-way through the second half, and the score remained knotted through the rest of regulation and the overtime. Kriz assisted on Lewis's goal. Madelyn Cox made seven saves in the key Division I matchup.

Cross country

Barrington's boys' cross country team defeated Moses Brown 15-50 and Mt. Hope 15-49 in a meet on Monday. 

Barrington's top five finishers were Mars Bishop (1), Hayden Ivatts (2), Eliot Laidlaw (3), Brian Donahue (4) and Max Agustin (5).

The Barrington girls' cross country team defeated Mt. Hope 18-41 and Moses Brown 16-43 on Monday.

Barrington was led by Kate Zitzmann (1), Teá Bishop (2), Riley Kloc (4) and Lily Sefranek (5).
