Barrington High grads still throwing strong

Collegiate weight throwers among best in the nation

Barrington High School graduates Adam Kelly, Charlie Ionata and Mike Alvernaz performed well for their respective college track teams during recent meets.

Adam Kelly, who attends Princeton University, won the weight throw at the Harvard Yale Princeton Meet. His career-best throw of 71 feet 9 inches is ranked number six in Division I this season.

Charlie Ionata, of Wake Forest, won the weight throw at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational with a throw of 64 feet 3.75 inches.

And Mike Alvernaz, who attends Troy University, was fourth in the weight throw (62 feet 1.25 inches) at the Clemson Bob Pollock Indoor Invitational.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
