AAA honors Barrington for 56 years without a pedestrian fatality

This year was another good year for Barrington, as it celebrated another year without a pedestrian fatality. That makes 56 years and running.

Barrington named the top school district in RI.

At a luncheon held on Dec. 6, law enforcement, traffic safety stakeholders and local "traffic safety heroes" were recognized for their outstanding achievements through the annual AAA Northeast Community Traffic Safety Award program.

Awards were presented to cities and towns which ended the year 2015 without a pedestrian fatality and also for their efforts in community education and enforcement. Barrington was recognized for the outstanding achievement of ending 2015 at 56 years without a pedestrian fatality; maintaining the best record in the state.

Accepting this award on behalf of the town was Barrington Police Chief John Lacross.

"Barrington's accomplishment of fifty-six years without a single pedestrian fatality demonstrates the police department's dedication to enforcement as well as infrastructure projects aimed at making walking and cycling safer. This record requires collaboration," said Diana Imondi Dias, AAA's manager of traffic safety programs.

"Barrington is a community with a high concentration of young children and youth; drivers must be mindful of observing the speed limit and curtailing distractions while driving. Clearly this community has worked collaboratively to ensure such an excellent record of safety," Ms. Dias said.

The community's collaboration is demonstrated through the police department's commitment to assist in a number of traffic and personal safety presentations and projects through Barrington's public schools and a variety of civic organizations.
