Eagles dominate Townies over final 50 minutes

BARRINGTON — The visiting East Providence and Barrington High School boys' soccer teams completed the second week of their respective Division I regular season schedules Friday afternoon, Sept. 16, the host Eagles running roughshod over the Townies in the final 50 minutes of the contest en route to a 3-0 win.

Elias Hastings netted a pair of goals for Barrington while Ben Sylvester added the other. Hastings, Reid Nolan and Alex Nicholson each had an assist. Keeper Ben Gentile four saves on six East Providence shots. Townies' goalie Nathan Silveira was the standout for his side, making 20 saves on 23 Barrington shots on target. The Eagles had nine other shots off frame. E.P. only had two shots off frame.

Sylvester scored what proved to be the game-winning goal only four minutes in the contest, aided by some miscommunication and confusion on the part of the Townies' defense. A high, floating ball through the box seemingly was headed past the end line. However, an alert Sylvester was there to pounce on it when it remained inbounds and the E.P. back line failed to make a play.

The Townies actually kept things relatively competitive for most of the rest of the first half. And only minutes after the Eagles took the lead, they had a very good chance at goal. John Caleb Kauffman took a pass from midfielder Dan Forsythe in stride at the top of the 18, had the defender beaten, but couldn't pull the trigger past the oncoming Gentile. Instead, his pass back to the six wasn't met by any of his mates, and the Eagles' defenders were able to clear.

Later in the first half, Kauffman had was E.P.'s last-best chance at goal, but his header off a Leandro Frias corner kick sailed high over the bar.

"We just got rolled over," EPHS head coach Tony Vieira said. "I think we ran out of gas. They kind of run you down a little bit. They're athletic and fast. They get after you. They're good in the air. So you kind of get overrun and a little tired."

Before and after that chance, Silveira kept the Townies in the contest with a pair of terrific saves. He stoned Story Salit, one-on-one, from just outside the six. He later punched a Sylvester shot over the bar. And seconds before the halftime whistle, he got just enough of a Nicholson shot to pad it off the post.

"We've been working for the last two years with this group. They started as 14 freshmen and eight sophomores and now they're 14 juniors and eight seniors. So I think the light switch is starting to turn on a lot quicker in games as the season goes on, a lot quicker than has the last two years," Barrington head coach Don Denham said of his team's ability to take over the contest.

"Our shape was unbelievable today, our defensive shape was great," he added. "We're really starting to get it. We've been practicing hard on the last two days. And I thought they did an outstanding job."

Things remained hectic for the E.P. net minder to start the second half. The Eagles relentlessly peppered the Townies' goal with nine shots in the first nine minutes of the period. Silveira made four saves while five shots missed target.

Barrington's 10th shot was on target and on frame and went past Silveira. Hastings settled a ball from the middle third and calmly punched it hard through the E.P. keeper's hands for the goal in the 51st minute.

"I think we got caught watching a little bit," Vieira said. "The first goal was a bit of a fluke. The ball skipped passed everybody and everybody thought it was out. The second one was also a bit of a fluke, too, going through his hands. But to be honest, Nathan stood on his head. If we're honest, they would have had three or four other goals if not for him, so it really doesn't matter."

The Townies' one and only potential chance of the period came next, following a Barrington foul just past midfield. But E.P. was also called for a foul on the ensuing free kick and nothing more materialized for the visitors offensively.

The Eagles later added an insurance tally in the final five minutes. Hastings ripped a shot from the left that caromed off the far right post and into the net.

Barrington, which lost to Portsmouth 3-2 in its season opener, improved to 3-1-0 (9 points) in the Division I standings. The Townies slipped to 1-1-1 (4 points) in the D-I ranks.

"I like that the development and growth, the things we've learned from the last two years, has come quicker this year," Denham said. "No matter what happens the next five games, whether we win five in a row or lose a couple, I know they have it. And now they just have to learn how to keep it consistent, where in the last two years we've had to learn how to get it."
