Joan L. Best Cole, of Barrington

Joan L. Best Cole, of Barrington, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a brief illness. Joan was the daughter of the late Harry and Marian (Vizard) Best.  

She is survived by her former husband, Nicholas Cole of Seekonk, Mass., and her four daughters, Melissa Witter and her husband, Philip, of Rehoboth, Mass., Beth Suriani of North Kingstown, RI, Susan Mitnik and her husband, Jared, of Barrington, and Jill Pinga of Pawtucket, and her 11 grandchildren, Erica, Shannon, Danielle, Michelle, Allison, Grace, Nicole, Brandon, Elena, Michaella, and Logan. She will be missed by her little dog, ChiWee.

Joan provided support, kindness and generosity to her family and friends. She was a talented artist, crafter, cake decorator, seamstress, and interior decorator. Her legacy will live on in the kindness and selflessness she showed to all and the life lessons she passed on to her children and grandchildren. 

Visiting hours will be Friday, Oct. 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Ave., Riverside, RI 02915. Memorial Service will take place Saturday, Oct. 29 at 9 a.m. at Smith-Mason Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Chapel Cemetery, Nayatt Road, Barrington.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
