Letter: Jason Knight represents true Democratic ideals

Posted

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Jason Knight for representative of District 67.

Jason is one of the most ethical, thoughtful, and intelligent men I know, and will do an excellent job of representing true democratic ideals at the statehouse.

He also will do his best to challenge the status quo of the present system which favors cronyism to a candidate’s beliefs. For example, a few weeks ago the Warren Democratic Town Committee and the District 67 Committee both endorsed Jan Malik without even hearing what Jason Knight had to say.

Then, when they were called out on this, both group’s chairmen wrote letters to the editor stating that Jason never requested to be considered for these endorsements. Mr. Silva, even implied that this was because “Warren was not important to him.”

Does it make any sense that a candidate fighting for this position would choose not to seek an endorsement from these committees? To me it seems obvious that this is another example of politics being more about who you know than what you actually stand for.

After all, when the Barrington Democratic committee invited both Jason and Jan to speak, they endorsed Jason as the candidate that better represents democratic ideals, such as common sense gun laws. Malik has an A+ rating from the NRA which, no matter how he tries to downplay this, is based on his votes about gun laws, and his answers to a questionnaire sent to him by the NRA.

On votesmart.org anyone can see that many people in our legislature, as well as all of our federal representatives (Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, David Cicciline, and Jim Langevin), have an F rating from the NRA.

Moreover, Malik’s voting record on gay rights is abysmal. Malik was one of only 15 representatives (out of 70) in the Rhode Island State House to vote against a 2013 same sex marriage law.

Finally, I am happy to say that Jason Knight has recently won the endorsement of Planned Parenthood, something which Malik has never received.

So, no matter what your personal views are on these issues, it is clear that Malik is not in line with a modern Democratic Party Platform. If you are a Democrat, and believe in these ideals, please do your own research before voting in September.

If you do, you will see that Jason Knight is the only candidate in this race who will push to protect women’s reproductive rights, uphold the rights of the LGBTQ community, and work to enact common sense gun laws.
