Letter: Some people are failing to clear sidewalks

Posted

To the editor:

The safety of our citizens is one of the foremost responsibilities of the Town of Barrington's municipal government. The recent snow storms have made it apparent that many of our citizens and businesses are not fulfilling their responsibilities in clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property.

Town manager issues warnings to 6 stores.

Chapter 161, Article II (Snow and Ice Removal) states that snow and/or ice shall be removed from the sidewalk and around fire hydrants by 6:00 in the afternoon on the day after the snowfall. If it is not removed the owner/occupant shall pay a fine of $50. The ordinance includes a hardship provision for individuals that are physically incapable or lack the financial means to pay for the removal. Any citizen that believes the hardship provision is applicable to their situation should apply to the director of the department of public works.

I am asking every citizen to fulfill their civic responsibility by complying with the snow and ice removal ordinance. The safety of our children transiting to school or their bus stop and the pedestrians throughout our community is too important.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. Let's make an extraordinary effort to make Barrington a safer community for all.

Jim Cunha
