Matthew Vohr, 44, of New York City, passed away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. He was the son of Dr. Fred Vohr and Dr. Betty Vohr Gidley. Matt graduated from Barrington High School, completed a post-graduate year at the New Hampton School, and a BA from Bennington College, where he made many friends, including his future wife Jennifer Winters. After graduation, he moved to NYC where he discovered his passion for cooking, which led to study at the French Culinary Institute.

Matt had a successful career as a chef and food stylist. He worked for Martha Stewart; the Katie Brown Workshop; various magazines including Southern Living and Shape; as well as many advertisement campaigns, including Budweiser, Tea Leaf, and Coca Cola. Matt was known for his ability to make food art out of anything.  Just this Christmas, he made an elaborate gingerbread house for the family. To learn more about Matthew’s career, you can link to his profile on his agent’s webpage at Halley Resources: http://www.halleyresources.com/details.aspx?nav=0&subid=7850&modelid=506442.

Matt had a zest for living. He loved growing up on the water, fishing, sailing, cruising on the family boat Juniper and learning to race small boats at the Barrington Yacht Club. He also enjoyed winter family vacations spent skiing and snowboarding. Matt had a life-long passion for the arts. In high school he enjoyed working backstage on a variety of theatre productions. Matt enjoyed fashion, and for a few years he worked as a model posing for Calvin Klein and Italian Vogue. In college, he was inspired to create some amazing art pieces from drawings and paintings, to modern furniture and outdoor sculptures. He loved the vibrant arts community in New York.

Matt leaves behind his mother and stepfather, Betty and Thomas Gidley of Barrington; his father and stepmother, Fritz and Patricia Vohr; siblings Jonathan Vohr and Jennifer Vohr Hurley; stepsiblings Ted Gidley, David Gidley, Hunter Toran, Magdelena Toran and Ezra Toran; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat Jack-Jack. A Celebration of Remembrance will be held at the Barrington Congregational Church on Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. Condolences may be sent to Smith-Mason Funeral Home (smithmason.com). Donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
