Twice last week Barrington residents fell victim to aggressive scams conducted over the phone.

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, a Walnut Road resident received a call from someone who said they were the police and her friend was in trouble. The caller said the woman needed to purchase four $1,000 gift cards from Wal-Mart and then give them the numbers over the phone.

The resident did just that, despite being warned by a Wal-Mart employee who said she should call her local police first. The scam call came from the number (204)-205-0094.

On Friday, Feb. 3, a New Meadow Road resident was reportedly the victim of a similar phone scam. The woman received a call from someone who said they were the police and her grandson was in trouble.

The caller said the woman needed to purchase three $1,000 gift cards from Best Buy and then give them the numbers over the phone. The resident did just that.

The caller then asked for another $2,000 worth of gift cards. The resident then called her grandson who said he was fine. The scam call came from the same number as the prior scam — (204)-205-0094.
