Police: Shooting victim would not cooperate with investigation

Chief credits cooperative effort of law enforcement agencies

Police said the victim in Thursday night's shooting was completely uncooperative, but his lack of assistance did not stop from law enforcement agencies from finding and charging the suspect.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said when officers first spoke to the victim, he refused to share any information about what happened or who shot him.

Residents call 911 after hearing gunshots on Maple Avenue.

The 34-year-old Barrington resident — he lives in an apartment building near the scene of the shooting — had suffered one gunshot wound to the stomach. He refused to answer any questions asked by police of rescue personnel, said police.

"He was uncooperative," added Chief LaCross.

Police spoke with witnesses and gathered information from other sources. The argument between the two men, said Chief LaCross, involved narcotics. The Barrington resident reportedly exited his apartment and confronted the suspect near the intersection of Maple Avenue and Kirby Street. The two men began to argue, when the suspect pulled a gun and fired three shots.

Police als learned that the suspect had reportedly fled the scene in a black BMW I5 at a high rate of speed.

Chief LaCross said investigators narrowed down the search to two individuals — a Pawtucket man and an East Providence man. Barrington police called law enforcement in those two towns and within a few hours, police had located both individuals.

Police discovered that the Pawtucket resident had not been involved in the shooting. Meanwhile, East Providence police tracked down the other suspect, 30-year-old Robert Fonseca, at his home at 21 Brentwood Drive in Rumford.

East Providence police took Mr. Fonseca into custody and brought him back to the Barrington Police Department for questioning. Barrington Police Captain Dino DeCrescenzo and Daniel Guglielmo, from the Rhode Island Attorney General's office, interviewed Mr. Fonseca, who allegedly admitted to shooting the Barrington man.

Police seized Mr. Fonseca's weapon, a .45 caliber handgun, and charged him with assault with intent to commit a felony, failure to have a license to carry a firearm, and use of a firearm while committing a crime of violence. He was set to be arraigned on Friday morning in District Court.

Chief LaCross said the residents of Barrington should not have concerns about their safety, following the shooting.

"This was a targeted incident," he said.

The chief also praised the work of Capt. DeCrescenzo, Det. Ben Ferreira, Sgt. Josh Birrell, SRO Josh Melo and all the officers who worked on the incident. He also credited the other law enforcement agencies who assisted with the various phases of the investigation.

"If it were not for the outstanding police work and joint investigation of the our Barrington Police Detectives and Patrolmen, RI AG Daniel Guglielmo, Sgt. Diogo Mello and Lt. Ray Blinn of the East Providence PD and members of the Pawtucket Police Department this crime would have gone unsolved and the arrest of the shooter and weapon seized would not have been possible," stated the chief in a press release. "The citizens of each community should be proud of the professional and dedicated actions of these officers to keep their communities safe.”
