Police say petty argument led to Thursday night's shooting

Posted

Members of the Barrington and East Providence police departments held a press conference on Friday afternoon, sharing details of the shooting that occurred on Maple Avenue a night earlier.

The conference also served as an opportunity for Barrington Police Chief John LaCross and Town Manager Jim Cunha to praise the collaborative effort put forth by law enforcement agencies during the investigation that followed the shooting.

Watch video footage of the press conference.

Chief LaCross said the arrest of Robert Fonseca would not have been possible without the hard work of Barrington, East Providence and Pawtucket police officers as well as members of the Rhode Island Attorney General's office.

Mr. Cunha also shared his thanks to the law enforcement agencies for getting "a dangerous man off the streets."

Police offered some information about the incident. They said the two men involved — Mr. Fonseca and the 34-year-old Maple Avenue resident who was shot — had never met each other prior to the shooting. He said the two men were having a "petty" argument which eventually led to Mr. Fonseca firing three rounds from his .45 caliber handgun.

Police also said victim had undergone surgery on Thursday night and had been listed in stable condition at the hospital on Friday morning. During prior interviews, police said the victim had refused to cooperate with police during their investigation.

Chief LaCross said a third man was interviewed during the investigation; the Pawtucket man had not been charged.

Police said Mr. Fonseca had prior interactions with police, but not for the last few years.

Officials also said Barrington had not had shooting (with a firearm) since the early 1990s when a man was shot and killed while trying to rob a jewelry store in town. Chief LaCross added that there had been incidents involving firearms more recently, including an armed home invasion last year.
