Man says he was waiting for the bus

Posted

Barrington police arrested Daniel Joseph Spearin, 40, of Newport, on a warrant issued from Rhode Island Superior Court for a probation violation.

A County Road resident contacted police at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, after he noticed Mr. Spearin walk onto his deck and remove cushions from deck furniture.

Mr. Spearin then put the cushions on the ground and placed his sleeping bag upon them, and then proceeded to crawl into the sleeping bag and go to sleep.

An officer responded to the scene and woke up Mr. Spearin, who said he was waiting for the RIPTA bus. (There was a RIPTA bus stop located nearby.) Police said the Newport man smelled of alcohol.

Police checked Mr. Spearin's ID, which revealed he was wanted on an active warrant. Police also charged Mr. Spearin with willful trespassing.
