Fencers from the Rhode Island Fencing Academy & Club (RIFAC) challenged the competition for medals at an unclassified tournament sponsored by Worcester Fencing Club recently. The “unclassified” label indicates that only athletes without a national rating might participate.
Barrington’s Logan Roccabello led the RIFAC charge with a first-place gold medal in senior men’s foil (for fencers ages 13 years old or older). With the victory, Logan achieved a long sought-after goal, his first rating of “E.”
To win the event, Logan had to defeat a fellow RIFAC team member Joshua Shin from East Greenwich.
Dahlia Pahlavi from Barrington earned bronze in senior women’s foil.

The memory of Neil Lazar, a former nationally ranked fencer, long-time fencing coach, and member of the U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame, was honored at a regional youth circuit, cadet/junior fencing tournament held recently at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, Conn.
Barrington fencers picked up a variety of medals at the event — Emma Mueller took second place in Y-12 women’s epee, while Dasha Smuk scored silver in Y-14 women’s epee, and Alexandra Smuk (sister of Dasha) earned bronze in Y-10 women’s epee. Anna Saal snagged a bronze in Y-14 women’s epee, and Brian McDermott placed sixth in junior men’s epee.

At a Super Youth Circuit competition held at Boston Fencing Club, Barrington fencers scored two of the three top-eight medals earned by the club team, both of them in epee. Joseph Ripa captured a third-place bronze in Y-10 men’s epee, and Alexandra Smuk placed seventh in Y-10 women’s epee.
At the Durkan Showcase Regional Junior-Cadet Circuit tournament in New Jersey, Anna Saal earned a podium position with a fifth place victory in cadet women’s epee. She was awarded both a medal and national points.
