Barrington Majors 12U team eliminated from All-Star states

Local team loses in extra innings

The Barrington 12U Majors All-Star team was eliminated from the state tournament after losing to Lincoln on Saturday night and Cranston Western on Sunday night.

Barrington, which allowed only two runs during the District II tournament, lost to Lincoln, 10-3, in the opening round of the state tournament. Lincoln scored two runs in the top of the first inning and then added four more in the third inning, building a 6-0 lead.

Barrington battled back in the bottom of the third inning, as Quinn Murphy singled and scored when Griffin Crain belted a two-run home-run. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Barrington's offense again went to work. Owen Pfeffer, Mitch Ivatts, Leo Caldarella and Murphy each singled, but Barrington was only able to score one run and trailed 6-3.

Lincoln added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Crain pitched five strong innings for Barrington, striking out nine Lincoln batters, while Trevor Snow pitched the sixth.

Playing in an elimination bracket game on Sunday night, Barrington allowed two runs to Cranston Western in the top of the first inning and a third run in the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Barrington answered with two runs, to cut the lead to 3-2. Snow singled, Pfeffer walked, Grant Culton drilled a single and Nick Scandura came through with a clutch single, scoring two runs.

On defense, Snow's pitching held Cranston Western scoreless through the next three innings.

Barrington loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a single by Finlay Thomson, a walk by Maxx McGloin, and a bunt single by Leo Caldarella, but the team was unable to take advantage of it and left the runners stranded.

Barrington's offense tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Scandura again came through with a big hit. After Snow walked and Pfeffer singled, Scandura came to the plate and roped a single that scored Snow.

Cranston Western regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning, 4-3, but in the bottom of the sixth Barrington refused to quit. Murphy singled, but was forced out on a fielder's choice by Gabe Tanous. Crain then ripped a double into the left-centerfield gap, scoring Tanous and knotting the score at 4-4.

The game went into extra innings — Cranston Western scored a run in the top of the seventh, taking a 5-4 lead, but Barrington was unable to answer.

"I am very proud of the way these boys played throughout the All-Star season," said Barrington manager Tom Crain. "They won the District 2 championship without a loss, which is quite an accomplishment. Despite the two losses in the state tournament, they played with determination the entire way. Facing challenges and losing is what ultimately builds character and success over the long term. It was a great experience for the kids, coaches, and parents."

Mr. Crain said the strong showing by Barrington also provides a great example to the younger baseball players in town, many of whom showed up at the All-Star games to cheer on the Majors 12U team.
