The Barrington High School girls cross country team put forth a strong effort at the state championship meet at Ponaganset High School on Sunday, but came up short against Portsmouth High School.

The Eagles finished second with 95 points, while the Patriots won the meet with 55 points. South Kingstown finished third, LaSalle was fourth and East Greenwich was fifth.

Barrington High School Coach Annmarie Gower said she was proud of her runners, adding that all seven Barrington runners competing in the state meet finished in the top 60.

"They worked so hard all season," said Coach Gower. "We had a rough patch over the past couple weeks, but they fought so hard to stay focused. So proud of each and every one of them!"

Barrington High School junior Caroline Livingston was the Eagles' top finisher. Livingston crossed the line fourth overall with a time of 19:02.63.

Stephanie Chun was 15th overall and Barrington's second finisher — the junior clocked a 19:59.3.

Senior Lily Sefranek finished 20th overall with a time of 20:07.43, and sophomore Tess Gagliano finished 28th with a time of 20:29.04. Margaret Nozaki, a junior, finished in 34th place with a time of 20:47.01, and her classmate Fiona Ainsworth was 43rd with a time of 21:02.46. Junior Erin Barstow rounded out Barrington's top seven finishers — Barstow finished in 57th with a time of 21:28.39.

The Barrington girls team has qualified for the New England Championship, which will be held at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday.
