Barrington girls race to Class A Championship

Barrington boys finish ninth

Kate Zitzmann and Annika Kelly each won two events and helped lead the Barrington High School girls track team to the Class A Championship on Monday, May 21.

The Eagles scored 142 points and finished well ahead of second place North Kingstown (92 points) and third place LaSalle (86 points). 

Kate Zitzmann raced to a first place finish in the 800 meter run and the 1,500. She clocked a 2:22.30 in the 800 and a 4:48.79 in the 1,500. Caroline Livingston finished in third in the 800 and second in the 1,500, while Meghan Zitzmann was fifth in the 800 and Stephanie Chun was sixth in the 1,500.

Annika Kelly won the discus with a distance of 117 feet, 10 inches, and was tops in the hammer throw with a distance of 175 feet, 5 inches. Annika also finished fifth in the shot put, while her teammate, Faith Polando, was third in that event. Faith finished second in the hammer with a distance of 162 feet, 6 inches. 

In the 400 meter race, Barrington's Julia Howarth had the fastest time, clocking a 59.78. Fellow BHS runner Jordynn Palethorpe was third in the event with a 1:02.88. 

Olivia Middleton won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump. Olivia had a distance of 34 feet, .5 inches in the triple jump and 16 feet, 6 inches in the long jump. Abigail Walter was sixth in the long jump.

Lily Sefranek finished fourth in the 3,000-meter race, and Audrey Gravelle was third in the 300-meter hurdles. 

Barrington's relay teams performed well at the class championship meet.

Barrington's 4x400-meter relay team of Audrey Gravelle, Stephanie Chun, Kate Zitzmann and Jordan Palethorpe won, crossing the line with a time of 4:17.40.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Tea Bishop, Margaret Nozaki, Lyndsey Turgeon and Meghan Zitzmann finished second with a time of 10:24.06.

And the 4x100-meter relay team of Julia Howarth, Olivia Middleton, Jillian Walter and Abigail Walter finished third.

Three Barrington High School relay teams placed and helped the Eagles finish ninth at the Class A Championship meet. 

The 4x800-meter relay team of George Wicker, Ethan Major, Eliot Laidlaw and Jamie Gunness finished third with a time of 8:28.88. The 4x100-meter relay team of Jack Cheng, Amit Bhatia, Walter Joachim-Delpoio and Ben Geoghegan finished sixth, as did Barrington's 4x400-meter relay team of George Wicker, Jay Scheieffelin, Eliot Laidlaw and Jamie Gunness.

Joachim-Delpoio was Barrington's top individual finisher, taking fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.20. Eliot Laidlaw was sixth in the 3,000-meter race.
