Barrington High School juniors' SAT marks are tops in state

Participation at 96 percent in Barrington for 'School Day' SATs

Posted

Barrington High School juniors tallied the top SAT scores, on average, in the state in 2017.

The local students averaged a 1,201 for their combined Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, holding the distinction as the top scorers in the state. East Greenwich High School juniors had the second-highest scores, with an average mark of 1,172.

The recent SAT scores only represented the juniors who took the test during the "SAT School Day in Rhode Island" event in April.

For the first time ever, high school juniors in Rhode Island were administered the SATs for free in-school. Statewide, 79 percent of high school juniors completed the SAT, while at Barrington High School, 96 percent of the junior class finished the test.

The full assessment results for the Class of 2017 — which will include seniors and other students who completed the SATs — will be available through the College Board in the next few weeks.

If the trend for BHS juniors holds true for all Barrington students who took the SATs last year, it will be the third straight year Barrington High School students recorded the state's top marks in the SATs, and the fifth year out of the last six.

Barrington High School Principal Joe Hurley said many people deserve credit for the recent scores.

"This is a reflection of the district," said Mr. Hurley.

The local principal said the strong SAT scores are due to a number of factors — parental support in Barrington, excellent teachers in the district, and local students who work very hard to and want to excel.

Mr. Hurley said Barrington's marks could have been even higher during the SAT School Day in Rhode Island event. He said that of the 4 percent of Barrington High School juniors who did not take the SATs, many were top achievers, including one boy who aced the test earlier in the year.

"He got a perfect score. He said 'Do I really have to take it?'" said Mr. Hurley, adding that a handful of students were also away from school that day at a special music event.

"What was really impressive was that the kids who didn't take it, they were some of our top students."

Also impressive, said Mr. Hurley, was that Barrington students' average scores hit the 600-point mark.

"We never did that before," he said.

Barrington juniors averaged a 601 on the English portion of the test and a 600 in math. Mr. Hurley said he is anxious to see if the scores for the entire class of students also hit the 600-point marks.

Consistent scores

Barrington students have built a reputation for high-achievement with the SATs. Local high school students' average scores have been well-above state and national averages, and at or near the top for all public high schools in Rhode Island.

In last year's district report, officials included a chart of the top-ranked high schools in Massachusetts, a state that has a reputation for stellar public schools. The chart included schools' SAT marks, graduation rates and other key information. Officials also included the same information for Barrington High School on the district report chart.

When compared with the top high schools in Massachusetts, Barrington High School would rank near the top 10.
