Barrington High School senior selected for special award

Maile Somera to be honored by Words Unlimited

Words Unlimited, the statewide organization of sportswriters, sportscasters and sports publicists, recently selected Barrington High School's Maile Somera for the Co-Schoolgirl Athletes of the Year Award.

Maile shares the award with Ponaganset High School's Gianna Rao.

Barrington's Maile Somera is a three-time Gatorade Girls Volleyball Player of the Year in Rhode Island. the Yale-bound Somera put the finishing touches on her high school career by leading Barrington to the I-A title and a runner-up finish to North Kingstown in the Division I Championship. She also led Barrington to the 2015 Division II title and the 2016 Division I title. (Rao is a standout track and field performer for Ponaganset.)

Words Unlimited will hold its 73rd annual Sports Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 10 at the Cranston Country Club, 69 Burlingame Road, Cranston. Reception will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30. Tickets are priced at $35 each and may be obtained by contacting Words Unlimited President John Parente at (401) 826-0555 or any Words Unlimited member.
