Do you have a sidewalk? Did you shovel it following Thursday's snowstorm?

Barrington officials are reminding residents to clear the snow from their sidewalks following the recent snowstorm.

Town law states that any business or resident whose property has a sidewalk is required to clear snow from that sidewalk by 6 p.m. on the day following the storm. That means residents and business owners have until 6 p.m. on Friday to clear their sidewalks. 

Failure to comply with the law could result in a $50 fine. 

Town officials have said this is a safety issue —pedestrians are put in harm's way when they are forced to walk in the roadway if sidewalks are not cleared. 

Anyone who is physically unable to clear the snow and unable to pay for someone else to clear it, may contact the Barrington DPW at 247-1907 to request assistance from the town. 

Avoid ice melt, salt on new sidewalks

Barrington officials are asking residents and business owners to refrain from using ice melt and rock salt on the newly installed sidewalks downtown. Officials said the deicers can damage the sidewalk surface. "As an alternative, sand can be used for traction," stated a release from the town. As part of the downtown streetscape improvement project, crews installed new concrete sidewalks on sections of Maple Avenue, Cottage Street, Wood Avenue and West Street. "Deicers can be used next winter, as the concrete will have had sufficient time to cure," stated the release.
