Rams top Eagles in season opener

The Barrington High School boys basketball team dropped its season opener at home Friday night to Division-I La Salle, 64-53. Elijah Perry’s 27 points helped seal the road win for the Rams.

“I saw a team that competed. They’re (Barrington) a little down because they felt like they could’ve won, I felt like we could’ve won,” said Barrington head coach Greg Graham. “They’re so much better and far along then they were last year. Expectations are very high...I feel like we have a very good basketball team that should be able to compete and make a deep playoff run.”

Barrington took an early 11-4 lead shooting three three-pointers six minutes into the game. La Salle made things interesting midway through the half when they put together an 18-13 run and finding themselves down by only 2 points, 24-22 late in the first half.

With the half winding down Barrington held a 34-27 lead before La Salle’s Perry nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to put the Rams within four 34-30 heading into the locker room.

The second half was played back and forth with both teams trading chances with one another. La Salle would tie the game 45-45 with just under nine minutes to go in the contest. The Rams would not look back as they would hold the lead through those nine minutes and take the opening night win.

“When you got a guy that can make plays for you down the stretch it helps,” explained Graham on La Salle’s ability to get the ball into the hands of Elijah Perry. “La Salle is a good team, they’re a division one team and they’re gonna make a deep playoff run.”

Junior forward Ben Silvia led the Eagles in points with 18 on the night while senior guard Mike Coogan finished with 12 points of his own in the season opening effort.

Coach Graham believes his team has the ability to make a deep run in the Division-II playoffs this season. Eliminating turnovers and knocking down shots will go a long way in helping the Eagles achieve that goal this season.

“Our thing is not taking bad shots, getting to the free throw line a lot more and not turning the ball over. When we do those three things we’re pretty effective,” Graham said.

Leadership seems to be a strength for this Barrington squad. With six seniors and a mix of four underclassmen, the Eagles seem to be one of the more well-balanced teams in Division-II basketball.

“The camaraderie right now. We got great leadership in the six seniors that I have, and an infusion of youth I got six or seven sophomores. I mean we have a great balance,” explained Graham. “It’s my job to find the depth and balance of this team and I didn’t do a good job of that, but it’s a work in progress.”

Michael Coogan and Deven Connors will be relied upon as starters for this Eagles squad as well as William Rywolt who will help add some scoring touch. Connor McQueary and Jonathan Adamson will be key contributors coming off the bench for the Eagles this year.

Barrington will next play at home Wednesday, Dec. 13 against Division-I opponent Woonsocket High School.
