A driving rain could not stop One Amazing Night, a celebration of all the things that make Barrington Middle School a stellar place to learn, grow and flourish.

Late last month, students showcased their special talents for friends and family and had some fun at the same time. It was the first time in the last six years that the event was held indoors, according to Angelica Bazyk, chairwoman for the event.

“I have been involved in One Amazing Night since my son was in sixth grade and this is the first time we have had to organize inside. We managed fine thanks to the help from volunteers,” she said.

Mrs. Bazyk said the night is the school’s biggest fund-raiser with tickets sold for events such as henna tattoos, a giant obstacle course, basketball free throw game, and a selfie wall.

Parents, students and guests meandered through the building and saw wood shop demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, allied arts and academic showcases and more.

The library had a display of artwork and the choirs from each grade performed, including the eighth-grade choir. Meggy Zitzmann and Zoey Despines, both members of the eighth-grade choir, were excited to perform in their last One Amazing Night as Barrington Middle School students.

“Its fun being in the choir. It’s good to have choir during school, it’s a nice break in the school day,” said Meggy.

Meggy and Zoey are both members of the a capella choir as well and performed Bohemian Rhapsody and Stitches by Sean Mendes. They both plan to be in the choir next year at the high school.

Ms. Bazyk said she has volunteered for this event in an effort to bring the talents of the students to the community.

“It’s a celebration of the arts and an opportunity to see the talents of the students at Barrington Middle School. It is a great way to show the students coming up from Hampden Meadows ... what they can become involved in when they are in middle school,” she said.

Locker demonstrations for upcoming sixth-graders drew a large crowd, especially since many have a fear of locker malfunction issues on the first few days of the school year. This gives them the opportunity to practice well in advance.

Besides parent volunteers, students from the Interact Club at Barrington High School were on hand, many helping with the refreshments.

Willis Bilderback, a freshman at the high school, was busy acting as point person between the grill just outside the main entrance and the food table set up in the cafeteria.

“I like events like this because it helps me meet and interact with other people. It makes me feel useful,” he said.

As people dined on cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chip and cookies, the Barrington Middle School band kept them entertained.

Barrington Middle School Principal Dr. Andrew Anderson said the recent One Amazing Night event at the school went off without a hitch. He wanted to thank all the people who helped One Amazing Night a great success.
