The Barrington Police Department is looking for the people responsible for igniting a "sparkler bomb" near the intersection of Sowams Road and Barneyville Road on Monday afternoon, Nov. 26.

According to Barrington police, officers were dispatched to that intersection at about 3:05, after someone heard a loud explosion there.

"The responding officer found a piece of tubing wrapped in black electrical tape along with several 12-inch pieces of wire in the vicinity, indicating the device was homemade in nature," stated a press release from the Barrington Police Department. "The device had a sulfur smell and left an approximately 20-inch diameter burn mark on the grass area. No suspects or vehicles were seen leaving the area prior to the device being detonated."

A police investigation has revealed that the sparklers had been placed within the device. Someone lit the sparklers and caused the explosion, said police. 

Barrington police later learned that Warren police had discovered a similar device detonated in their town later on Monday night, Nov. 26. Both police departments are working together, along with the RI State Fire Marshal's office.

"All three agencies are asking the public for their help regarding any information leading to the creator of these dangerous and illegal devices or if any local store employees may have recently sold sparklers to any individuals," stated the release. 

Any residents who hear loud explosions should call their local police departments immediately. 

Anyone with information about the suspects involved with these devices should call the Rhode Island Fire Marshal’s Tip Line 401-383-7723 where a money reward may be provided. All calls are strictly confidential.
