A routine traffic stop in Barrington early Friday morning led to the arrest of a Virginia man wanted for a violation of the sex offender laws.
A Barrington police officer spotted a car without a license plate traveling on Route 114 at about 4:50 a.m. on Oct. 27. The officer ordered the vehicle over to the side of the road and then approached the driver's side window. The officer asked the driver, 64-year-old Clyde D. Blankenship, for his ID.
The officer then ran a check of the identification; the search revealed that Mr. Blankenship was wanted as a fugitive from justice in Virginia. Police said Mr. Blankenship violated the sex offender registration laws in Virginia. Officials in Virginia said they would extradite Mr. Blankenship back to that state to be prosecuted.
After learning of the criminal charge, the officer went back to Mr. Blankenship's vehicle and asked the Salem, Va. resident to get out of the vehicle. Police said Mr. Blankenship then locked the car doors. The officer warned the Virginia man that if he did not get out of the vehicle on his own, then he would be forced out of the vehicle.
Mr. Blankenship then obliged, and police charged Mr. Blankenship with being a fugitive from justice.
