One of the passengers in the car that crashed on Sowams Road Tuesday night is currently listed in critical condition, said Barrington police.
The 19-year-old male passenger was reportedly not wearing his seatbelt when the car driven by 20-year-old Dhaval Paresh Patel failed to navigate the turn on Sowams Road near Johannis Farm, slammed into a guardrail and collided with a van parked on the side of the road.
Mr. Patel, a Seekonk resident, is facing multiple drunk driving charges. Meanwhile the 19-year-old male passenger from Providence suffered significant injuries and is reportedly listed in critical condition.
Barrington police were called to the crash at the northern end of Sowams Road at about 7:25 p.m. Mr. Patel and the passengers were reportedly driving home after spending time at Colt State Park in Bristol.
Police said they found five empty beer bottles and one empty bottle of Yukon Jack whiskey inside the vehicle. One full beer was also found inside the car.
Police charged Mr. Patel, of 983 Taunton Ave., Seekonk, with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol-first offense, DUI involving bodily injury-first offense (a felony charge), and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
Rescue workers transported Mr. Patel to the hospital for head injuries suffered in the crash. Crews also transported the two individuals who were passengers in the vehicle — the 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from Pawtucket. Mr. Patel and the female passenger were treated for lacerations and other minor injuries and then released.
A second vehicle — a contractor's van that was parked near Sowams Road — was struck by Mr. Patel's vehicle and suffered front end damage. No one was inside the van at the time of the crash.
