Barrington preschool expands while roots remain the same

Construction project nearly doubles the size of BECC

Creating a safe, nurturing space for the youngest learners has been the cornerstone and mission of Barrington Early Childhood Center (BECC) since its inception in 1955.

BECC recently completed a major capital campaign and added another 1,600 square-feet of space to meet the needs of the community. The center, located on College Lane, has almost doubled in size.

Gayle Justynski, education director at BECC, said with the number of students enrolled and projected enrollment in the future, the lack of space was a growing issue.

"We had to be very creative with storage and placement of educational materials. Space was definitely an issue for us. Every child is different and we are dedicated to provide the best environment for all our young students," Mrs. Justynski said.

The construction that began in March of this year was done by Gasbarro Building and Design. Jay Gasbarro, a Barrington contractor, sent his five children to BECC from 2003 to 2014.

“The expansion was a way to offer greater program variety and the whole building is now up to code and has air conditioning throughout. There is a better flow for instruction and for staff,” Mr. Gasbarro said.

Mary Dewitt, administrative director at the preschool and a former BECC parent, said the volunteer board of directors was instrumental in bringing the renovations to fruition.

"We are lucky to have a great group of dedicated parents who are invested in the success of our school and in their children's future. The new space was well thought-out and in keeping with our mission," she said.

The biggest stipulation for the construction timeline was not to interfere with instruction, so the contractor had to be finished by August for the beginning of the school year.

The new addition has added some much-needed space including a kitchen, offices and washer and dryer.

“We actually have closets and storage space that was desperately needed. We have air conditioning, which is a luxury since the building previously only had window units,” Mrs. Justynski said.

Tuition costs were not affected by the capital campaign for renovations.

Mrs. Dewitt, a new member of the 10-person staff at the school, said coming to work at the preschool is like coming home.

“It’s come full-circle. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s a good feeling to know that BECC is still thriving with strong community-building values. It has always been a place where new families to town meet each other and build lifelong friendships. I know I did,” Mrs. Dewitt said.
