Barrington resident Russ Furlong is hoping members of the town's park and recreation commission will approve his request to add lines for pickle ball to the tennis courts on Kent Street.

Mr. Furlong was introduced to pickle ball recently and has grown to love it. He said the sport is good for people of all ages — he has even noticed that students at Barrington Middle School have been playing pickle ball on the basketball courts as part of their physical education classes.

"I play in Bristol right now," said Mr. Furlong. 

The Barrington resident said Bristol town officials added pickle ball lines to the tennis courts at their town common. He is hoping that Barrington officials will do the same for the tennis courts at Kent Street.

"I just started playing last fall," he said, adding that it's a fun sport that he and his wife can play together. 

Pickle ball has been described as a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. The ball used is similar to a plastic Wiffle ball. Mr. Furlong said if his request is approved, the lines added to the tennis courts would be a different color than the white tennis court markers. 

The park and recreation commission meeting is set for Thursday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at the Barrington Senior Center. The meeting is open to the public.
