State unveils new school report card system

Posted

Barrington's public schools received stellar marks in the Rhode Island Department of Education's 2018 School Accountability Report.

Five out of Barrington's six public schools received five-star ratings, while the sixth school earned a four-star rating. A five-star rating is the top mark a school can receive on a RIDE School Report Card.

The ratings are part of the new, recently-released school accountability report by the state, which is a requirement under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

While the vast majority of schools in Rhode Island received three-star ratings or below, Barrington High School, Barrington Middle School, Hampden Meadows School, Nayatt School and Primrose Hill School each earned five-star ratings. Sowams School earned a five-star rating in the majority of categories and a four-star rating in achievement; a school's overall score is based on its lowest star rating.

"Although all schools in Barrington received overall ratings of 4 stars and above, we will also be engaged in a deep dive toward continuous improvement in all schools across all indicators aligned to our strategic plan," stated Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore.

The RIDE School Accountability Report offers people an opportunity to take a comparative look at all the public schools in the state. It was developed by a special committee that included parents, teachers, school and district leaders and other community members.

The system assigns points to each school based on a series of categories, such as academic performance, achievement, growth, English language proficiency, student success, student absenteeism, teacher absenteeism, graduation rates, and college and career readiness.

Each school's star rating is directly tied to the number of total points the school receives in each category.

How Barrington schools rated

• Barrington High School: Five stars across all indicators; too few students to report English language proficiency

• Barrington Middle School: Five stars across all indicators; too few students to report English language proficiency

• Hampden Meadows School: Five stars across all indicators; too few students to report English language proficiency

• Nayatt School: Five stars across all indicators; too few students to report English language proficiency

• Sowams School: Four stars overall; five stars in "Exceeds Proficiency" and "Subgroup Performance," four stars in "Achievement," and too few students to report in "English language proficiency"

• Primrose Hill School: Five stars across all indicators; too few students to report English language proficiency
