Barrington students raise $3,000 for The Tomorrow Fund

Sowams School rallies for one of its own

Posted

Early Tuesday morning, June 19, students at Sowams School gathered in the cafeteria for a special announcement.

In addition to saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the local elementary school students watched as their principal, Jim Callahan, helped present a check to officials from The Tomorrow Fund.

"We raised a lot of money," Mr. Callahan told the students.

As the crowd watched, two students unveiled the large paper check written out for $3,000.

Students had raised the money with a rainbow day event, and by selling homemade jewelry and other items, and holding lemonade stands in their neighborhoods.

The fund-raisers were held in honor of Sowams School first-grader Rachael Wilmarth, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year and has been undergoing treatments for the last few months.

Rachael's twin sister Sophie and her older brother Ryan helped Mr. Callahan present the money to the two representatives from The Tomorrow Fund, Lisa Abbenante and Karen Becker.

Ms. Abbenante accepted the check and then thanked the local students.

"Three thousand dollars is an awful lot of money," she said.

Ms. Abbenante then explained that The Tomorrow Fund helps children and families impacted by cancer. The organization helps families pay their bills and also holds a summer camp for kids.

Ms. Abbenante and Ms. Becker then presented a plaque to Mr. Callahan and the entire school, thanking them for their donation.
