Annika Kelly finishes ninth in hammer throw in European Championships

Barrington's Annika Kelly has earned a spot in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October. 

Annika, who has a family connection to Estonia, will compete for the European team. 

After winning the Estonian Under 18 National Championships 3k hammer throw with a distance of 62.56 meters (205 feet, 3 inches), which was also a meet and national record, and the 1k discus throw with a throw of 35.65 meters (116 feet, 11 inches) Annika headed to Gyor, Hungary on the Estonian national team for the European Athletics Under 18 Championships to compete in the 3k hammer throw.

There were 32 girls from 22 countries entered in the qualifying round on Thursday, July 5. Annika was ranked 17th going into the meet and finished 11th in the qualifying round with a throw of 61.56 meters (202 feet). The top 12 finish qualified the Barrington resident for the finals on Friday, July 6. In the finals she moved up to ninth place with a throw of 61.22 meters (200 feet, 10 inches).
