Local girl places at Estonian Championships

Current and former Barrington High School weight throwers performed well at the recent Sons of Italy Track and Field Throwing Championships at Conley Stadium in Providence.

Barrington High School's Jack Dunn had a personal best throw in the 7.26K hammer throw event, with a distance of 158 feet. That was strong enough for a second place finish in that event. Jack also finished fifth in the 12-pound hammer throw event, with a distance of 180 feet, 2 inches.

Barrington's Annika Kelly took top honors in the girls' 4K hammer throw. She finished with a distance of 170 feet, 6 inches — more than 10 feet farther than the second place competitor and a personal best for Annika. In the same event, Barrington's Faith Polando finished third with a distance of 147 feet, 11 inches, and Sydney Polando was fifth with a distance of 142 feet, 2 inches.

In the girls' 3K, it was an all-Barrington top three, as Kelly finished first with a distance of 190 feet, 7 inches, Faith Polando was second at 163 feet, 2 inches, and Sydney Polando was third at 156 feet, 10 inches.

Former Barrington High School standout Robyn McFetters won the women's open division 4K hammer throw with a top distance of 172 feet, 10 inches.

Annika Kelly also competed in the Estonian Championships this summer. The local 16-year-old finished second in the 3K hammer throw at the U18 championships in Rakvere, Estonia on July 6. At the UT ASK Healing Competition in Tartu, Estonia, Kelly finished first with a distance of 195 feet, 4 inches. The distance would have been a new Barrington High School and New England 3K hammer throw record.

On July 23, Kelly competed in the Estonian Open Championship and threw the 4K hammer 163 feet, 3 inches, which was strong enough for sixth place. (She was the youngest competitor).

At the Baltic U18 Championships in Valmiera, Latvia, Kelly finished in first place in the 3K hammer. Her top throw was 191 feet, 2 inches.
