Beaming with pride at Barrington Middle School

Students leave their mark (signatures) on new middle school

Posted

Current Barrington Middle School students will forever be a part of the new middle school building.

Late last week and early this week, students took turns signing their names to a special steel I-beam that will be used in the construction of the new building. The beam was painted white, and students, teachers and other staff used black indelible markers to sign their names to it.

The beam-signing served as a lead-up to the "topping out" ceremony, which was held on Tuesday, June 19.

Members of the school committee and town council, along with other local officials, were scheduled to attend the "topping out" ceremony, which refers to the act of raising and securing the highest steel beam on a new construction project.

"As a celebratory gesture, contractors place an evergreen on top of the building during a Topping Out Ceremony. The evergreen usually stays in place until the entire project is finished," stated a recent press release from the lead architect for the project, Kaestle Boos Associates.

The new Barrington Middle School is scheduled to be opened in Aug. 2019. When it is complete, it will feature classrooms that have movable partitions which allow for collaborative learning spaces, and larger "breakout spaces" on each floor for group learning and presentations. The new school will also include a 400-seat auditorium, a gymnasium, a learning commons/media center with maker-spaces, other specialty classrooms and outdoor learning spaces.

Taxpayers approved a $68.4 million bond to pay for the construction of the new school.
