BHS girls lacrosse team aims to keep improving

Barrington knocks off South Kingstown 23-8

Posted

On Sunday, the Barrington High School girls lacrosse team exploded for a 23-8 win over South Kingstown.

BHS Coach Selina Dacey is hoping that the victory will serve as a boost to the Eagles as they head into the second half of the season.

“Our record does not reflect the momentum,” Coach Dacey said.

The Eagles are 3-5 in Division I standings. Coach Dacey said team members are learning that a consistent effort during practices will produce better results during games. She has encouraged the girls to give everything they can when they are practicing. Coach Dacey said the coaches are working to rebuild the culture.

“I feel like that’s my main goal this year,” she said. “… There’s a learning curve.”

Coach Dacey has also preached to her team to “control the controllables.”

“We can’t focus on the un-controllables,” she said, referencing the playing conditions or any calls that did not go their way.

The coach said the team members are buying into the approach, although it is taking some time.

Coach Dacey said this year’s team features a big senior class, including Anna Lombardi and Alex Hope. The two seniors have led the Eagles’ offense this season. Coach Dacey said that despite missing two games because of an injury, Lombardi is still racking up the points. She said Lombardi is a physically talented player and is fun to watch.

Hope is equally potent on the offensive end of the field. The senior has 20 goals and nine assists. Coach Dacey moved Hope from midfield to the attack. “It’s showing in her numbers. Hopefully she’s seeing the positives from that.”

Barrington’s captains are defender Lily Kirk and midfielder Stella Hillier. Coach Dacey praised both players for their consistent level of play and willingness to do whatever they need to help the team succeed.

“I can’t say enough about Lily Kirk… just her positivity. I never worry about her. Stella runs the midfield. She’s probably running seven-plus miles (per game). Her lacrosse IQ is one of the best out there,” Coach Dacey said.

Coach Dacey also mentioned key contributions from Emily Horn, Winnie McCauley, Hannah Bairos, Emily Ferdenzi, Holly Moscrop, Ava Anderson, and freshmen Lily O’Neil, Ashley DaCosta and Sophia Scandura.

Katie McAdams has been solid in net for Barrington, said Coach Dacey. The sophomore has made 42 saves and allowed just 22 goals in the first seven games. Coach Dacey said McAdams is fast and agile in net.
