Barrington Garden Club holds wedding reception to kick off flower show

The Barrington Garden Club is inviting all to a “Blithewold Wedding” — a cocktail party in conjunction with their annual flower show on Friday, April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The show runs Friday through Sunday and will feature unique one-of-a kind arrangements and floral designs all surrounding the wedding theme. The show will be held at Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, and will serve as a way to showcase the talents of the members.

Many of the rooms on the first floor of Blithewold Mansion will have the wedding themed arrangements, artistic crafts, a horticulture exhibit, a photography exhibit and more. The entrees will be judged by a panel and ribbons will be awarded to winners.

Sally Phillips, chairwoman for the show, said the emphasis is on alive or dried plant materials — no silk or dyed flowers.

“The purpose of the Barrington Garden Club is to give back to the community and educate the public about floral design and horticulture. This show is primarily a fund-raising effort so we can continue our work in town,” Mrs. Phillips said.

Mrs. Phillips and her team of event planners, including Emily Read and Sandi Tinyk, are offering sponsor opportunities and have secured about six thus far. They are also holding an “opportunity drawing” where tickets can be purchased for items such as a watercolor painting, a garden consult, a seasonal planter, gift certificates, tennis lessons, a boat cruise with lunch and more.

The more than 130 Barrington Garden Club members share a deep interest in the environment and all things gardening. Their monthly programs feature experts in a wide variety of gardening subjects. Members also enjoy workshops, garden forums and trips to beautiful Northeast gardens.

To serve the community they plant and maintain seven gardens in Barrington, provide floral designs for the home-bound, and foster a love of gardening in children through a "juniors program."

Some of the areas they help beautify in town include the Osamequin Nature Trail, which has been a club preservation project for many years. Last year they partnered with the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, whose members will work to eliminate invasive plants and maintain the nature trail.

Last year, to honor those in the armed forces, the club joined with Hameho Garden Club to purchase a Blue Star Memorial Marker. The Marker is situated at Police Cove Park, and was dedicated on Memorial Day last year. A garden planted around the Marker is maintained by both clubs.

The club also maintains seven town gardens, provides weekly flower arrangements to the Barrington Public Library, decorates town buildings during the holidays and decorates the RI Veterans Home in Bristol.
