Carroll — Building community is very important

Posted

Building a strong community is one of the most important things we can do for Barrington. Of course having a thriving community makes our town more attractive and keeps our property values rising, but more importantly, it helps unite us in times of trouble.

When our neighbor is ill, we don’t care what party they support, we just bring them a meal so they have one less thing to worry about. When tragedy strikes the family down the street, our sympathy and support is not conditioned on where they stand on a controversial issue.

We can build community by encouraging activities like the “Day of Caring”, and by providing events to celebrate together like the summer concert series or the tree lighting. We can take opportunities to unite and reject the temptation to divide.

Building community is important because, if we cannot stand together when times are tough, we will surely fall apart.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
