Celebrate Barrington this month, and next

September is going to be a big month for Barrington.

Organizers of the Barrington 300 celebration — the 300th anniversary of the founding of Barrington — have planned two great events for this month.

The first is this weekend — Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10.

Heritage Weekend will feature three bus tours that explore and celebrate the town's historic neighborhoods. On Saturday, there will be two tours offered. The first will visit the White Church, Old Barrington Village and the General Allin House. It runs from 10:30 to 1 p.m. The second will run from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and will visit Maple Avenue and the Alfred Drown neighborhood.

"We will give a narrated tour of Maple Avenue, the heart of Barrington’s Italian American community since the later part of the 19th century and then on to Alfred Drown neighborhood which began to flourish after 1850, with a visit to one of the older homes and a quick stop at one or two of the older churches," said one of the event organizers. On Sunday, Sept. 10, there will be a tour of Jenny's Lane, Tyler Point and Hampden Meadows. The tour runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Later this month, on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Barrington 300 group will host an event titled "Taverns to Temperance and Back Again (A Spirited History of Barrington)." The fun evening will be held at the Wharf Tavern and offer a free lecture focused on Barrington's history with taverns and temperance. "…it may surprise many locals to learn that before it evolved into the quiet bedroom community of today, Barrington was home to at least four taverns located along what is now Route 114 or County Road and the Wampanoag Trail."

The lecture and slide show start at 6:15 p.m. and admission is free.

This month's events — and a number of others — will lead up to the Barrington 300 gala event on Saturday, Oct. 21. The celebration will be held at Rhode Island Country Club and feature music, food, drinks, and much more.
