District reaches an agreement with Springboard Education in America

Posted

This year, Barrington schools will be working with private companies to offer before-school and after-school childcare inside the buildings.

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore emailed parents on Monday with news that Springboard Education in America would begin operations in Barrington schools after Sept. 1. The company had previously requested use of the district's K-3 elementary schools to offer before-school and after-school childcare.

"They will provide the start date as soon as possible for the benefit of interested families," Mr. Messore wrote in the email.

During a recent interview, the superintendent said he planned on requesting facility approval for Springboard during the Barrington School Committee meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

Some people had expected the superintendent to seek that approval at an earlier meeting, but, he said, there had been a delay while Springboard officials worked to hire more staff to help with the childcare.

"They're still hiring in some of the schools," said Mr. Messore.

"I think starting up a new program always has logistical challenges… I'm hoping this gets off the ground and this runs successfully."

Springboard will be offered at Primrose Hill School, Sowams School and Nayatt School.

Parents who are interested in registering their children for the childcare program at the K-3 elementary schools are asked to contact Springboard officials Jill Jackson or Gina Mistretta. Ms. Jackson, the area director, can be reached at jjackson@springboardkids.com. Ms. Mistretta, the program manager, can be reached at gmistretta@springboardkids.com.

A different organization will offer childcare services at Hampden Meadows School. According to Mr. Messore's email, the Bayside Family YMCA will provide before-school and after-school care at Hampden Meadows School. The local YMCA will also continue to run a childcare program before and after school at their West Street facility.

Mr. Messore said anyone interested in learning more about that program or registering their child for it, should contact Bayside YMCA Operation Director Tricia Driscoll at pdriscoll@gpymca.org.
