Eagles unable to hold off Indians in Pop Warner football

Key touchdown for Barrington negated by penalty

The Barrington Pop Warner Junior Pee Wees lost to Dartmouth, 20-7, on Sunday.

A breakdown on the Eagles' offensive line allowed Dartmouth to take a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter, as the Indians recovered a fumble in Barrington's end zone.

But the Eagles showed no quit, mounting an impressive drive and grabbing a 7-6 lead. Chucky Potter gashed the Dartmouth defense for a big gain, and AJ DiOrio broke free for a long run as well. Barrington's touchdown came on a pass from DiOrio to Mitchell Ivatts, who pulled in the tipped pass over the Dartmouth defender and scampered into the end zone. DiOrio bulled through three Dartmouth defenders for the extra point.

Barrington's defense stymied the first-place Indians throughout the remainder of the first half and carried the 7-6 lead into the break.

The Eagles opened the second half with the ball and again marched down the field. A questionable holding call negated a long run by Potter, deep in Dartmouth territory. But Barrington responded with another key offensive play: Potter took a pitch from DiOrio, dodged a few defenders and sprinted around the right end of the Indians' defense all the way to the Dartmouth end zone.

But the apparent 13-6 Eagles' lead was wiped out when a referee whistled Barrington for a block in the back penalty. Barrington coaches disputed the call, but could not change the outcome. A few plays later, Dartmouth took over possession, and, capitalizing on back-to-back 15-yard penalties, found themselves at Barrington's five yard line. The Indians scored a few plays later and took a 13-7 lead.

The Eagles again responded with a strong offensive drive, but Dartmouth sacked the Barrington quarterback, scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown for their second defensive score. The Indians held on for the 20-7 win.
