The Barrington High School girls volleyball team graduated 11 players from last year's squad, and enters this season with only 11 players on its roster.
"We have a smaller team this year with only 11 players, a glaring contrast in our first match against Coventry who has enough bench players for almost two more teams…" said Barrington coach Ron Enos. "Despite that, we've seen great competition in practice and in the loss against Coventry."
Barrington is led by one of the best high school volleyball players around — Maile Somera.
Maile tallied more than 400 kills, nearly 250 digs, and led the Barrington High School girls volleyball team to the Division I state semifinals last fall. The outside hitter has been twice named Rhode Island's Gatorade Player of the Year in volleyball.
Last year, Somera led the Eagles to a 17-4 record, recording 401 kills, 248 digs, 45 service aces and 24 blocks. She finished the season with a kill percentage of .471 and a hitting percentage of .335. Maile is a two-time Division I Player of the Year and a two-time state tournament MVP.
But Coach Enos cautioned: "Aside from Maile we have only one other senior, Dulce Mann, who will be competing for the Libero position. The only other varsity experience is (outside hitter) Grace Angelini, who earned the starting role mid-way through last season, and setter Casey Lambert who saw some time last year before a knee injury ended her season."
Barrington's starters include juniors Gabby Schirber, Jane Bessel and Lauren O'Cain. Camile Brousseau, Anna Li, Christina Ducharme and Kayleigh Putnam round out the rest of the Eagles' roster.
"It will take some time and patience for the younger players to develop but we hope to find what everyone can do well and put them in positions to help the team succeed," said Mr. Enos. "We're very encouraged by what we've seen so far and are looking forward to another exciting season for Barrington volleyball."
