Honors pile up for Barrington native

Julia Soares, of Gettysburg College field hockey team, named scholar-athlete of the year

Posted

Gettysburg College junior forward Julia Soares, a native of Barrington who was recently selected to the 2018 All-Centennial Conference Field Hockey team, was also chosen as the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Soares was the lone Gettysburg College fall student-athlete to earn the title of Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which recognizes a junior or senior with the highest cumulative GPA on the all-conference team. The junior also became the first Bullets field hockey player to earn the award.

In addition to being named CC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Soares also garnered Academic All-Centennial and Academic Honor Roll status from the conference. (To be nominated for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing and have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher.)

An All-CC First Team honoree this fall, Soares was Gettysburg’s most potent offensive threat, leading the team with nine goals, 19 points, and 76 shots this fall. Four of her scores were game-winners and the Bullets went 5-1 in contests in which she scored. The junior forward tallied two goals and an assist in a 6-2 win over Cabrini University and she turned in the only score in a 1-0 double-overtime decision at Bryn Mawr College.

Soares has raised her offensive output in each of her three seasons at Gettysburg. For her career, she has totaled 15 goals, five assists, and 35 points.
