Jean K. MacIntyre, 70, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Born in 1947, Jean was the daughter of the late Robert C. Ungberg and Norma L. Ungberg and a lifelong resident of Barrington. Jean was married to John A. MacIntyre, Jr. for 47 years. In addition to John, she leaves behind two children, Jamie M. Furr and John A. (Scott) MacIntyre III, a grandchild Dylan M. Furr, and a sister Roberta C. Gray.

Jean graduated from Barrington High School in the class of 1965 and from Springfield College in the class of 1969. She was a lifelong physical education teacher and coach, spending the majority of her career at The Wheeler School in Providence.

As a longtime member of the Barrington Yacht Club, she served on the board of governors as membership chairman and secretary. She was the club historian and was active on both the race and social committees. As club historian she was the author of the Barrington Yacht Club centennial book in 2008. In addition, she was one of the founders of the Women Teaching Women sailing program. Jean loved being out on Narragansett Bay, and because of her commitment and involvement with the Barrington Yacht Club and dedication to improving the local sailing community, she was a recipient of both the Isaac B. Merriman Memorial Award and the Dorothy Anne Healey Trophy.

Teaching and bettering the lives of others was always at the heart of everything that Jean was involved with. She was passionate about giving back to her community, environmental conservation and strongly committed to volunteering her time. She was actively involved with: Roger Williams Park Zoo, Springfield College Alumni Association, Yellowstone Forever, Flower Power Barrington, Barrington Preservation Society, Barrington PTA, Barrington Community School and numerous others.

A celebration of life will be held in Jean MacIntyre’s honor at the Barrington Yacht Club on May 12 from noon to 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the MacIntyre family asks that donations are made in support of the Roger Williams Park Zoo made payable to the Rhode Island Zoological Society in memory of Jean MacIntyre. Please visit smithmason.com for online condolences.
