Lawrence M. Lansinger, 81, of Barrington

Lawrence M. Lansinger, 81, of Barrington, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 surrounded by his family after facing a series of health challenges with dignity and grace. He was the beloved husband of Virginia (Evans) Lansinger, to whom he had been married for 58 years.

He was born July 18, 1936, in Atlanta, Ga., son of the late Howard and Lucille (Ewell) Lansinger, and was raised in Akron, Ohio. Larry graduated from University School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Amherst College and Case Western Reserve Business School in Cleveland, Ohio.

A business executive, his career was in sales and finance with Sun Oil, Central National Bank of Cleveland, Textron and the Rhode Island State Treasurer’s Office.

He volunteered for South Providence Tutorial, the Juvenile Hearing Board and served his beloved Amherst as chair of his 25th reunion. He was an active member of the Barrington Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and twice served as clerk of session.

He loved all sports and especially baseball, finally becoming a loyal Red Sox fan after his longtime allegiance to the Cleveland Indians.

Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter Robin Lansinger, of Providence. He was the father of David Evans Lansinger (1963-1981). He also leaves his brother, Jere R. Lansinger and wife Lee, of Camano Island, Wash. and his niece and nephew of Seattle.

His family will miss him terribly but is comforted in knowing he is reunited with his son, where they are undoubtedly playing ball with the boys of summer for all seasons. Calling hours in Smith-Mason Funeral Home are Thursday, March 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Memorial service will be held in the Barrington Presbyterian Church, 400 County Road, March 31, 11 a.m. Burial will be in Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Barrington Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
