Letter: AfterProm fund-raiser is Saturday, help needed

Prom season is upon us once again. The BHS AfterProm Committee has been working hard all year raising the funds needed to put on an all night, free event after the senior prom. The event, attended by more than 90 percent seniors, is the oldest running AfterProm in RI. The AfterProm Committees over the years have been led by dedicated parents whose mission was to provide a substance free event aimed at keeping our students safe on an otherwise risky night.

I remember in 1999 when Barrington lost the first of what would be five teenage boys to alcohol-related accidents over the next eight years. In 2005 we lost two in a Nayatt Road crash and in 2007 we lost another young man in a crash on New Meadow Road. The New Meadow Road accident happened just months after losing another student on the river in a teenage boating incident. In these years it was common to hear stories about large drinking parties and parties that would occur every night during a school vacation week.

Thanks to the hard work of the Barrington School Department, Chief Lacrosse, The BAY Team and parents we have not lost any of our students in the last 11 years to drunk driving. The AfterProm is one event that sends students a positive message about having substance free fun.

I am proud to be a co- chair for this year’s event. I want to thank our committee of amazing women and men who make this event a success year after year. We are still in need of donations to ensure this event continues.  Donations can be mailed to BHS, 220 Lincoln Ave., attention AfterProm. For more information and to donate online visit our website at www.barringtonafterprom.org. We are also hosting a clothing drive this Saturday April 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at BHS. We can accept clothing, shoes, handbags, belts and linens. We get paid by the pound, so clean out those closets!

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
