It's always bothered me when people use the playing of the National Anthem to stage their protests. I find it disrespectful, but it is not unlawful to do so. Flying advertising under the US flag is another matter entirely. It's the law.

4 U.S.C. 5 - Display and use of flag by civilians; codification of rules and customs; definition; Title 4, Section 8 states "Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown."

This isn't a difficult concept to grasp.

Do the members not see that, or do they just not care?

And if it is the latter, more than just the veterans in town should be speaking up.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
