Letter: Local man helped bring grass field to HMS

To the editor:

Thank you to Steve Thys!

In late August, the Hampden Meadows School (HMS) PTO Board moved forward with its plan to have sod installed on the recess field behind the school.

For the first time in many years, students were able to run on grass during recess — some students even took their shoes off to feel the new grass under their toes! This project was completed with the help of many volunteers, but was especially possible due to the hard work and guidance provided by Steve Thys.

The process started last spring and when Steve, a golf course superintendent at Rhode Island Country Club, was contacted by the board with the hope that he would share his expertise on different types of sod that would be appropriate for a project of this nature.

Steve not only gave sound advice, but volunteered his own time and knowledge to design the layout of the field, helped to repair the sprinkler system, contacted and oversaw the sod installer, and ultimately ensured the project came together by early fall.

The HMS PTO would like to acknowledge and thank Steve Thys for his dedication and support to ensure the students have a grass field to play on for years to come.

Due to the generosity of Steve, HMS parents, teachers, and the community, the HMS PTO was able to enhance the experience of Hampden Meadows School students. The field will be called the Hampden Meadows School Thys Field in appreciation for all of Steve’s hard work.

With much gratitude,

April Tibbetts, Co-President
