Letter: Schools need resources before changing start times

As a current Barrington High School student, I find it distressing and confusing that as a town we are seriously considering spending over $400,000 to change the start times of school while vital resources in the high school are unavailable.

By this, I mean that there are no available, working color printers for student use. All of the color printers at the high school are broken and have been for quite some time. I personally spoke with one of the art teachers who stated that the printer in the art department has been broken since June.

This is a serious obstacle for the students because we are often required to turn in assignments that are printed in color. Notice I said required because that means that if you do not own a color printer at home or if your color printer at home is out of ink you must transport yourself to the library and pay in order to print something in color.

This is not the only resource which is lacking that is supposed to be available to the student body so that we may excel as students.

Go ahead and continue to discuss the school start times, however, please provide us with the resources we need and are supposed to have in place at the high school.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
