Letter: Teenage boys in Barrington paid for our sundaes

To the editor:

A few weeks ago on a Friday evening my sister was visiting me. She said, "I have a $20 gift card for Newport Creamery.  Come on I'll treat you to a sundae." My sister is 84 and I'm 87. We ordered our sundaes and they were put on the counter, and my sister handed the server her $20 card. While we were waiting, five teenage boys came in and stood behind us waiting for their turn. The server said their computer wouldn't accept our card because the system was down. Because we had the card, neither of us brought our purses in with us. We told the server we didn't have any cash, but he said he couldn't take the card. I said I'll go get my purse. Just at that moment one of the teenage boys stepped forward and another right behind him and said, "I've got it covered."  We thanked them heartily, and my sister tried to give him her $20 gift card to use some time later, but they refused and paid for our order. She asked if they were seniors, but they said they were sophomores. What a treat in more ways than free sundaes!
