Michael J. Kean, 51, formerly of Barrington


Michael J. Kean, 51, formerly of Barrington, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. 

Born in Providence, a son of Ann (Iasa) Stopfel of Barrington and the late Joseph Kean, he lived in Barrington and Pawtucket for many years. 

Mr. Kean was a firefighter for the Pawtucket Fire Department for 26 years before retiring in 2012. He enjoyed golfing. 

Besides his mother, he is survived by a sister, Kathleen Schafer and her husband Dr. Ted Schafer of Coronado, Calif.; a nephew, Owen Schafer and a niece, Amy Schafer. 

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, in the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside at noon. Calling hours are Tuesday morning, 11 a.m. to noon. Burial will follow in Mont St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pawtucket. Flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in Michael’s memory to St. James Lutheran Church, 49 Middle Highway, Barrington, RI, 02806 would be deeply appreciated.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
