Barrington Police will not charge anyone following the investigation into a Barrington daycare where a worker allegedly gave children melatonin gummies without their parents’ knowledge.
During an interview on Thursday, Feb. 23, Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said the department had concluded its investigation. He said none of the parents of the children involved wanted to press charges.
“We’ve closed out the investigation,” he said.
The Barrington Police Department and DCYF conducted separate investigations into Kids Quarters, a Barrington daycare where an employee allegedly gave melatonin gummies to multiple children. DCYF officials contacted Barrington Police on Jan. 9, after someone filed a complaint against Kids Quarters.
According to a statement from the daycare owner Nicole Kopka, the employee involved was immediately terminated. Kopka also stated that the employee had passed a rigorous background check process.
Chief Correia said four toddlers under the age of four had been involved. He said detectives interviewed the business owner, employees at the daycare, and parents of children who go to the daycare. He said police had been waiting to see if any of the parents wanted to press charged.
During an interview on Feb. 23, Chief said: “They (the parents) indicated they did not want to press charges.”
The state’s Department of Children Youth and Families has also concluded its investigation, but would not share any details. Damaris Teixeira, the public information officer for DCYF, shared the following response after the Barrington Times requested the findings of the investigation: “The DCYF has completed its investigation. DCYF has shared the results of its investigation with law enforcement and with DHS (Department of Human Services). DCYF is unable provide any additional details at this time due to state confidentiality restrictions.”
