Police called to two churches in Barrington

Incidents reported at Holy Angels and St. John's

Barrington places of worship doubled as crime scenes twice last weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, police received a call from officials at Holy Angels Church on Maple Avenue after someone stole money that had been placed in a candle offering collection box. The larceny took place just before 4 p.m.

According to a witness, a stocky man entered the church and quickly made his way to the candle offering collection box. The witness did not recognize the man as a regular church-goer and questioned him after the suspect started to leave the church.

After he was asked what he was doing, the suspect allegedly told the witness "It's cold outside" and fled to his truck that was parked outside the church. The witness followed the man but could not get the license plate information — the truck was described as an older model blue Chevy pickup.

Police dusted for fingerprints, but were unable to get any. The church's pastor reportedly told police that such incidents happen "a lot."

On Sunday, Dec. 16, a woman was attending a service at St. John's Church when someone broke into her parked car and stole her purse. The woman said the purse contained her wallet, $200 in cash and some credit cards. The woman told police that she had left the car unlocked while she was inside the church.
